Silver pair cases

Verge

£1050

A very early verge from this eminent London maker.

MOVEMENT : Gilt verge movement, with large, nicely engraved and pierced winged balance cock, blued screws, four square pillars, jewel endstone, and silver regulator disk. Signed (Jno. Ellicott, London).

In good, complete condition though the jewel endstone is a replacement. Running, though a little fast (gaining about 5 minutes per hour).

DIAL : A slightly later (mid/late 18thc) white enamel dial in fine condition, except for small repaired chips around the catch at 6. Later brass hands.

INNER CASE : Silver, with maker's mark DS. In good condition though the stem and bow are probably replacements. The hinge is fine and the bezel snaps shut. The high dome, bull's eye crystal is fine.

OUTER CASE : Good heavy silver pair case with no hallmarks, and maker's mark ECN. In good condition throughout. The catch, catch button and hinge are fine and the bezel snaps shut correctly.

The outer case is a perfect fit for the inner.

John Ellicott succeeded his father , also John, in 1728. This watch is of that period so could be by John senior.
