Gold repousse pair cases
Verge movement
Sold
MOVEMENT : Gilt verge movement, with engraved and pierced balance cock and plate. The balance cock features crown and portrait. Diamond endstone. Signed (ALLEN WALKER) and numbered (371). Fine original condition and running well.
DIAL : 35.25 mm. Signed white enamel dial, in excellent condition with no damage except for one very light (almost invisible) hairline running from the centre towards 11. Fine 18th century blued steel beetle and poker hands.
INNER CASE : 40 mm. 22 carat gold, hallmarked for London, but with the maker and year mark rubbed. Also marked with the same serial number as the movement (371). Reasonable condition but with a few bruises on the back and the pendant has been reattached. The hinge is fine and the case closes nicely. Good high dome bull’s eye crystal with no damage.
OUTER CASE : 46 mm. 22 carat gold. No hallmarks, which is common for a repousse case of this date. Again the hinge and catch are fine. A wonderful case in excellent condition, with very little wear repousse work which shows a battle scene.
The construction of the case is unusual, with the very high relief repousse back pieced, and a gold foil pinned to the inside of the case, providing a matt background to the scene.
The cases, excluding movement but including crystal, weigh 47.5 gms.
Allen Walker is listed in London and Amsterdam up to 1783.
