Gold pair cases
Verge movement
Sold
This is a wonderful gold verge, with an excellent movement, with beautiful gold champleve dial, but spoilt by a very poor botched repair to the outer case. Needs some attention from a skilled goldsmith.
MOVEMENT : Gilded verge movement, fully signed (Bos Toller, London). It is numbered 1, which is unusual. Diamond endstone to the balance cock and very fine quality engraving and piercing. Complete and running well.
DIAL : 33.5 mm. Gold champleve. Good condition, thoug with a scratch from the edge at 5 towards 6. Good 18th century steel beetle and poker hands (not reproductions).
INNER CASE : Diameter 39.25 mm. 22ct gold hallmarks for London, 1749 (rubbed), maker TB. Good condition with just a few light bruises. The bow is a brass replacement. The hinge is fine though the bezel does not snap shut. The high dome crystal is fine.
OUTER CASE : Diameter 46.5 mm. The bezel and rims and sides of the case are fine, but the centre of the back is thin and discoloured by a very bad repair. Probably an attempt to fit a new catch spring. The case spring does work and the case shuts but there is no catch button.
The cases, excluding movement and crystal, weigh 47 gms.
Bostock Toller is listed in London from 1742.
