Price £2750

An early English verge with original champleve calendar dial, in silver pair cases. All in good condition

MOVEMENT : Gilt verge movement, the particularly finely engraved and pierced winged balance cock with wide ‘D’ shaped foot. Four Egyptian pillars, silver regulator disk and blued screws.
Signed “PETER WISE, LONDON” and numbered (368). In good condition and running well.

The calendar work is complete, and also functioning correctly.

DIAL : Silver champleve dial, signed “WISE, LONDON” on the central disc, and calendar aperture at 6.

In good condition, with just a small hole in the central disc, just to the left of the date aperture.

Fancy gilt hands.

INNER CASE : Silver, with no hallmarks, but rubbed maker’s mark matching the outer case (II below a coronet).

In good condition, but the bow is a later replacement. The hinge and the high dome crystal are fine and the bezel closes correctly.

OUTER CASE : Silver pair case with matching makers’s mark to the inner (though much clearer).

The hinge and catch, and catch button are fine and the case closes correctly. The silver is in very good condition, with just a couple of very light bruises.

Peter Wise (Cheapside, London) is listed in the Clockmakers’ Company from 1693.

The maker’s mark on both cases (II with pellet between and coronet above) is that of Jonathan Jones, Freeman of The Clockmaker’s Company in 1687.
