Pair cased verge by Atkins, London

A very fine quality, mid 18th century London verge, in horn and gilt pair cases.

MOVEMENT : Gilt verge movement, the engraved and pierced balance cock with a large diamond endstone. Four square baluster pillars, silver regulator disk and polished steel screws.

Running well, and in good condition.

Signed “Thos. Atkins, Southwark” and numbered “154”.

The movement is protected by a gilt removable dustcap, signed and numbered as the movement.

DIAL : A fine white enamel dial, in good condition, though with a couple of flakes at the centre, and a light scratch around the chapter between 10 and 1.

Good 18thc blued steel hands.

INNER CASE : Gilt brass.

In good condition, though there is some wear to the gilding, especially around the band, stem and bow. The hinge is fine and the bezel snaps shut correctly. The high dome crystal has some scratches, but no chips.

OUTER CASE : Horn or shell covering to the gilt brass pair case.

Again in good condition. The catch is complete and the case snaps shut correctly. The covering is in good condition with just three cracks to the bezel and and short crack and a small dent to the back. There is a small piece missing on the back between the catch button and the rim. All of the pins are present and appear to be original.

The silver marks are for Martin Larsen, licensed in Rudkøbing, Denmark, between 1829 and 1869.

OUTER CASE : Horn or shell covering to the gilt brass pair case.

Again in good condition. The catch is complete and the case snaps shut correctly. The covering is in good condition with just three cracks to the bezel and and short crack and a small dent to the back. There is a small piece missing on the back between the catch button and the rim. All of the pins are present and appear to be original.
