18thc Paris verge with enamel portrait and chatelaine

A mid 18thc., gilt pair cased Paris verge, with a good gilt and enamel chatelaine.

MOVEMENT : Gilded movement with verge escapement, the balance bridge finely engraved and pierced with foliage. Large silver regulator disk and four round baluster pillars.

Signed (Romilly A PARIS) and numbered (2567).

The movement is in good condition and is running well.

DIAL : Signed white enamel dial.

In reasonable condition, with a chip at the winding aperture, a few short hairlines on the edge between 8 and 10, and a repair along the edge between 5 and 7.

Gilt hands.

INNER CASE : Gilt brass, with enamel plaque to the back, and crystal set bezel and back. The movement serial number is stamped on the inside.

Quite good condition throughout. The gilding has worn off the stem and bow but is otherwise complete and bright. Just one tiny crystal missing from the bezel and none from the back. The portrait plaque has a few scratches but no chips or repairs.

The hinge is fine and the bezel shuts nicely, though the catch is missing. The high dome crystal has one small chip on the edge at 6, but otherwise is fine.

OUTER CASE : A glass backed exhibition gilt pair case. In good condition throughout. The glass is fine and the bezel snaps shut properly.

CHATELAINE : Gilt brass with portrait enamel to the top and landscape enamel to the base.

Complete, and in good condition throughout.

Jean Romilly was born in Geneva in 1714 and worked in Paris between 1752 and his death in 1792. A great watchmaker, inventor and innovator.
