Cylinder escapement
Sold
An early London cylinder watch, with a very fine movement.
MOVEMENT : Gilt cylinder movement, with finely engraved and pierced balance cock, diamond endstone, four square baluster pillars, and silver regulator disk. Blues screws.
Running well, and in very good condition.
Signed “C. Fennymore, London” and numbered (507).
The movement is protected by a removable gilt dustcap, signed and numbered as the movement.
DIAL : A white enamel dial, in reasonable condition, with damage on the edge around 6, and a hairline running from this damage across the dial to 12.
Good 18th century matching gold hands.
INNER CASE : Silver gilt, with rubbed hallmarks for London, 1764 and maker’s mark DB under a coronet.
In good condition. The hinge is fine and the bezel snaps shut correctly, but the stud from the catch is absent, so the movement needs to be released by pressing the catch through the aperture that the missing stud has left.
The high dome crystal is fine. The gilding is intact except for a little wear around the band, and wear to the brass stem and bow.
OUTER CASE : Gilt brass pair case. Maker’s mark WH. It is a perfect fit for the inner, so is probably original.
In good condition. The catch and button are complete and the case snaps shut. The hinge has one broken sleeve but is still strong. The gilding shows some wear, mostly to the middle of the back.
