Mid 18th century repousse verge

A mid 18th century verge watch, in silver repousse pair cases.

MOVEMENT : Gilded verge escapement, with an engraved and pierced lace edged balance bridge. Four square baluster pillars and silver regulator disk.

Signed (Saml. Weldon, London) and numbered (24807).

The movement is in good condition, and is running well.

DIAL : The white enamel dial is in good condition, except for a repair at the opening catch at 6. Also a small flake at the centre hole.

Continental style fancy gilt hands.

INNER CASE : Silver, with London hallmarks for 1761 and maker’s mark D.P.

In good condition, though the stem has been reattached. The hinge is fine and the bezel snaps shut correctly. The high dome, bull’s eye crystal is perfect.

OUTER CASE : An attractive silver pair case with repousse decoration showing a classical scene, with two central figures surrounded by scrolls.

In good condition, though with some wear to the high points of the repousse work, mainly to the figures on the back.
The hinge and catch button are fine and the bezel snaps shut correctly. The catch button is dented.

Samuel Weldon is listed in London between around 1740 and 1780.

The inner case maker is David Pullin, working at Coleman Street and Islington Road in London, between around 1758 until 1776 or after.

The ‘lace’ edge to the balance cock was a popular form of decoration for London makers, but only used for a short period between about 1750 and 1770.
