Early 18thc silver verge

An early London verge, with a fine movement, by an important maker.

MOVEMENT : Gilt verge movement, the beautifully engraved and pierced winged balance cock with a wide “D” foot. Four Egyptian pillars, silver regulator disk and blued screws.

Running well, and in very good condition, with just some light scratches over the signature.

Signed “L. Bradley, London”, with serial code “BDL”

DIAL : A fine white enamel dial. Slightly later than the movement, probably mid 18thc,.

In good condition, though with a chip at the catch at 6, and some light scratches

Fancy gilt hands hands.

INNER CASE : Silver, with maker’s mark “Ia” and serial code “BDL”. Worn hallmarks for London, 1715?.

In good condition, with just slight compression to the band. The hinge is fine and the bezel snaps shut, though leaving a slight gap to top left. The pendant has been reattached.

The high dome bull’s eye crystal is fine.

OUTER CASE : Silver pair case, with matching maker’s mark “Ia” stamped five times.

In good condition. The catch and hinge are fine and the bezel snaps shut correctly. There is a dent to the catch button.

Langley Bradley (c1663 to c1748) apprenticed in February 1688 to Joseph Wise and freed 1694. He was appointed Assistant of the Clockmaker’s Company in 1720 and served as master in 1726.
Bradley made the original clock for St Paul’s Cathedral, in about 1706.

The case maker is William Jacques of Angel Court, Snow Hill, London. He was a Freeman on the Clockmakers Company in 1681.
