Early 19thc. London “Doctor’s Watch”

An early 19th century London verge watch, in silver pair cases, with a regulator style “doctor’s” dial and stop lever.

MOVEMENT : Gilt fusee movement, with verge escapement, engraved and pierced balance cock, four round pillars. Silver regulator disk.

Signed “H. Herbert, London” and numbered (14866).

A steel lever under the dial at 3 allows the movement to be stopped and restarted.

Running well, and in good condition, though with a few scratches on the plates.

DIAL : An interesting regulator style white enamel dial, with overlapping chapter rings. In good condition though it has been restored.

Gilt Breguet style hands, with a blued steel seconds.

INNER CASE : Silver, originally gilded, with hallmarks for London, 1802, maker’s mark TG (rubbed).

In good condition, although the stem has been reattached, leaving a grey solder residue visible on the inside. There are some light scratches and one small dent to the back. The gilding is complete on the inside though worn off the outside.

The hinge is complete and the bezel snaps shut correctly. The high dome crystal is good.

OUTER CASE : Silver pair case, with matching hallmarks and maker’s mark to the inner.

In good condition. The hinge and catch are complete and the case snaps shut though the silver has worn off part of the catch button, exposing a base metal. Like the inner case, the gilding is complete on the inside though worn off the outside.
