Mid 18thc. London Verge Repeater

A mid 18thc. London verge escapement watch, with a quarter repeat.

MOVEMENT : A fine gilt movement with verge escapement, engraved and pierced balance cock with diamond endstone.

Signed Tho.Ward London and numbered 1310.

Quarter repeating with two polished steel hammers striking a bell.
The repeating function is activated by pushing down the stem. This strikes once for each hour, and twice for each quarter. Good tone to the chimes.

The movement and bell are in good condition, and the watch is running well and repeating correctly. The movement is protected by a removable silver dust cap.

DIAL : White enamel dial. No repairs but there are surface scratches and chips around the edge, between 5 and 7 and at 9. Gilt hands..

INNER CASE : Silver gilt, engraved and pierced

The case is in good condition, and the bezel snaps shut correctly. The high dome crystal is fine. The gilding is complete on the body of the case, but worn from the stem and bow

OUTER CASE : A later silver gilt case with hallmarks for London, 1836 and maker’s mark S.S.

In good condition though with wear to the gilding on the rims and centre of the back. The hinge, catch and catch button are fine and the bezel snaps shut correctly.

The watch would originally have had a pierced outer case, as with all 18thc. repeating pair cased watches.
