A Fine Gold Cylinder By Gray & Justin Vulliamy

A fine quality mid 18th century London cylinder movement, in gold pair cases, by this great partnership of watchmakers.

MOVEMENT : Gilt cylinder escapement, with engraved and pierced balance cock with diamond endstone. Four square baluster pillars, silver regulator disk and blued screws.

Signed Benj. Gray, Just. Vulliamy, LONDON and serial code (iis).

In excellent condition and running well.

DIAL : Fine white enamel dial in very good condition, with just one very light hairline from the edge at 10, and some damage at the opening catch at 6.

Excellent 18th century blued steel beetle and poker hands.

INNER CASE : Gold, with London hallmarks for 22ct., 1751, maker’s mark JB.

In excellent condition, with just a little rubbing around the band through contact with the outer case. The hinge is fine and the bezel snaps shut nicely. The high dome crystal is also fine.

OUTER CASE : Gold pair case with hallmarks and maker’s mark matching the inner. The back is beautifully engraved with a very intricate monogram.

Again in excellent condition. The catch and hinge are fine and the bezel snaps shut correctly. The catch button is dented on one side.

Benjamin Gray was active between 1720 and1760 and Justin Vulliamy between 1730 and 1775. Benjamin Gray was made clockmaker to George II in 1744. Vulliamy emigrated from Switzerland earlier, and at some point married Gray’s daughter. Gray and Vulliamy were partners from that period on.
