18thc. verge in underpainted horn case

A verge watch in particularly fine condition, in beautiful underpainted horn pair cases.

MOVEMENT : Gilt verge movement, with finely engraved and pierced balance cock. Four round baluster pillars and silver regulator disk. Blued steel screws.

Running well, and in very fine, almost mint condition.

Signed Geo Taylor, London and numbered 7215.

DIAL : A fine white enamel dial, in perfect condition. Gilt hands, with slight mismatch in colour.

INNER CASE : Gilt brass. Stamped with marker’s mark IR.

In good condition though with some wear to the gilding around the band and to the bow and stem. The hinge is fine and the bezel snaps shut correctly. The high dome bull’s eye crystal is fine.

OUTER CASE : A gilt brass pair case with underpainted horn covering. The bezel and back are both decorated with a seaweed, with the back showing a hunting scene of hunter, dog and hare. All very well painted.

The hinge and catch are complete and the case snaps shut. The catch button has some wear.

The horn is in exceptional condition. Just two short scratches to the bezel and a couple of tiny chips on the edge of the back at the catch button.

There is an interesting calender watch paper in the outer case, from a Manchester watcmaker, dated Oct (18)23.
