John Ellicott cylinder pocket watch

A fine mid 18th century cylinder watch by an eminent London maker.

MOVEMENT : Gilt cylinder movement, with nicely engraved and pierced balance cock, clean blued screws, four beautiful ornate pillars, large diamond endstone, and silver regulator disk.

Signed “Ellicott, LONDON” and numbered 4686.

The movement is protected by a removable gilt brass dustcap, signed and numbered as the movement.

All in good condition, with the gilding still bright, though with some scratches on the top plate around the pillar top. Running well.

DIAL : Classic mid 18thc white enamel dial in fine condition, with just one light hairline running from the centre towards 2.

Good 18thc blued steel beetle and poker hands.

INNER CASE : Silver, with London hallmarks for 1759, maker GB, and movement serial number 4686.

In good condition though the stem has been reattached. The hinge is fine and the bezel snaps shut. The high dome bull’s eye crystal is fine.

OUTER CASE : Silver pair case with matching silver and maker’s mark to the inner.

In good condition throughout. The catch, catch button and hinge are fine and the bezel snaps shut correctly.

Edward Ellicott was partner with his father John from 1760, and their watches were signed Ellicott after about 1758.

The case maker is probably George Bouvet , Freeman of the Clockmakers’ Company in 1739.
