A verge escapement watch, in very large silver pair cases, with regulator style dial (doctor’s watch), large seconds dial and stop work.

MOVEMENT : A gilt fusee movement, with verge escapement, engraved and pierced balance cock, four round pillars, and Tompion type regulator.

A steel lever under the dial at 4 allows the movement to be stopped and restarted.

Signed Hen”y Cumberland, London and numbered 167.

Running well with the stop lever working correctly.

DIAL : A fine white enamel dial, with subsidiary hours/minutes and seconds dials

In excellent condition, with only a few very light scratches.

Excellent matching ornate gold hands, with plain seconds.

INNER CASE : Silver, with London hallmarks for 1799, maker’s mark IC.

In good condition, with a few scratches on the back. The bezel snaps shut correctly.
The high dome crystal is good and the bow and stem appear to be original.

OUTER CASE : A silver outer case, with hallmarks matching the inner.

The silver is in good condition, with just a few small bruises and dents to the back.. The hinge and catch are good, and the case snaps shut correctly. The catch button has worn down but still functions.

Henry Cumberland is listed in London in 1799.

The case maker is probably James Callow of Bartholomew Close, London.

The outer case contains four early watch papers, all from the South West of England (Tavistock & Launceston). These are dated between 1834 and 1853.
