A late 18th century verge escapement watch, in silver and shell pair cases, with calendar dial.

MOVEMENT : Gilt fusee movement, with verge escapement, engraved and pierced balance cock, four round baluster pillars, blued screws and silver regulator disk.

Signed Fra.s Harvey, Hayle and dated 1786.

All in good condition and running well. The calendar hand is correctly moving forward every 24 hours.

DIAL : A white enamel calendar dial, in good condition, except for one large chip on the edge between 12 and 1 (filled).

Blued steel hands.

INNER CASE : Silver, with hallmarks for London, 1796, maker’s mark NTW (rubbed)..

In very good condition throughout. The hinge is fine and the bezel closes correctly. The high dome bull’s eye crystal is good.

OUTER CASE : Base metal, with silver rims and pins. Covered with tortoiseshell or horn.

In good condition, with excellent colour to the shell. The hinge and catch are fine though the catch button has worn down. The bezel snaps shut correctly.

The shell covering is complete, with three cracks across the bezel and one crack across the back below the hinge. Only eight pins missing from the bezel, but about half from the back.

Francis Harvey is listed in Hayle, Cornwall in 1786.

The case maker is Nicholas Thomas Wood of Clerkenwell, London.
