Gilt and shagreen pair cases, 51 mm
Verge escapement
Price £750
A mid 18th century London watch, with a fine verge movement, in gilt and shagreen pair cases.
MOVEMENT : Gilt fusee movement, with verge escapement, beautifully engraved and pierced balance cock with fine mask to the neck. Four square pillars, blued screws and silver regulator disk.
Signed Brothrs. Strigels, London and numbered 368.
All in very good condition and running well.
DIAL : A white enamel dial, in good condition, though with some damage around the edge between 4 and 8 (filled at 6).
Good 18th century blued steel beetle and poker hands.
INNER CASE : Gilt brass, with no maker’s marks.
The metal of the case is in good condition with no dents, but there is wear to the gilding, especially to the bezel, bow, stem and sides. The hinge is fine and the bezel closes correctly. The high dome crystal has a few light scratches.
This movement has no catch through the dial at 6, so it is accessed by pushing the catch through a hole in the band of the case at 6. This releases the catch so that the movement may be swung out.
OUTER CASE : Gilt metal, covered with shagreen.
The metal is in good condition, though with wear to the gilding on the rims.
The hinge and catch are fine though the catch button has worn down. The bezel snaps shut correctly.
The shagreen covering is worn, with about 30% missing from the bezel but almost all of the back covering has survived. There are about 20 pins missing from the bezel, but only about 5 missing from the back.
There are two watchmakers named Strigel (George Philip and William Frederick) recorded in London during the mid 18th century.
