Gold repousse pair cases, 47 mm
Verge escapement

Sold

A mid 18thc. London watch, in particularly fine gold repousse pair cases. All in rarely found excellent condition.

MOVEMENT : Gilded verge escapement, with engraved and pierced balance cock, showing birds and foliage, with a fish at the neck. Four square pillars, silver regulator disk and blued screws.

Signed Jno. Waldron, Cornhill, London and numbered 3390.

The movement is in excellent condition, and is running well.

DIAL : White enamel dial, in very good condition, with no hairlines or restoration and just a few very small scratches.

The dial is a perfect fit and appears to be original but could be slightly later when Arabic numerals became more popular.

Fine matching gold skeleton hands (the minute slightly bent).

INNER CASE : 22ct gold, with London hallmarks for 1767, and maker’s mark H.B.

In very good condition throughout, with original bow and stem. The hinge is fine and the bezel snaps shut nicely. The high dome crystal is fine.

OUTER CASE : A wonderful gold repousse pair case, decorated with a Classical scene. I believe this scene to be ‘The Continence of Scipio’.

In excellent condition, with almost no wear or damage. The catch and hinge are fine and the bezel snaps shut correctly.

The gold cases have a combined weight of about 55 gms.

John Waldron is listed at Cornhill, London from 1767 and died in 1770.

The case maker ‘s mark is possibly for Henry Billinghurst.
