An early 18thc. European watch in the English style.

MOVEMENT : A gilt movement with verge escapement, and engraved and pierced winged balance cock, showing scrolls and a mask at the base and foliage and scrolls above. Four square pillars and gilt regulator disk.

Signed Nicolas Grand Roy and numbered 285.

All in good condition, and running well.

DIAL : White enamel dial, in very good condition, with no repairs, and just a few very small chips around the central aperture. One of the three dial feet is missing, but the dial is held firmly to the dial falseplate.

Fancy gilt hands.

CASE : Silver, with worn maker’s mark.

In reasonable condition, with some dents and repairs around the band. The hinge is good and the bezel snaps shut. The stem has been reattached.
The high dome bull’s eye crystal is good.

This watch would originally have had an outer case, which is now absent.

Nicholas Grand Roy is listed circa 1705, Place unknown.

A slightly later watch by Nicholas Grand Roy exists in the British Museum collection. The country of origin is suggested as Switzerland.
