A late 18thc. verge escapement watch, in silver pair cases.
MOVEMENT : The gilt fusee movement has a verge escapement, engraved and pierced balance cock, four round pillars, and a Tompion type regulator.
Signed J. Down, London and numbered 8817.
Running well and in good condition although there are some scratches to the top plate.
DIAL : The white enamel dial is in good condition, with just one chip on the edge at 2 and a smaller chip at the centre aperture. Otherwise it is fine, and no repairs.
18thc. black steel beetle and poker hands, with a little damage to the ‘beetle’ end of the hour hand.
INNER CASE : Silver, with London hallmarks for 1782 and worn maker’s mark JC.
In good condition. The hinge is fine and the bezel snaps shut correctly. The high dome crystal is also good.
OUTER CASE : A silver pair case, with marks matching the inner.
In very good condition. The hinge and catch are good and the case snaps shut correctly. However the catch button, has worn down though is still functional.
