A nice quality, late 18thc. verge watch, with polychrome dial and music related decoration to the case and dial.
MOVEMENT : A good quality gilt verge movement, with engraved and pierced balance cock, the table with a vase below a bird. Four square pillars and silver regulator disk. Both 3rd and 4 th wheels have 6 spokes (always a sign of quality).
All in good condition and running well.
Signed Josh. Denton, HULL and numbered 362.
DIAL : A polychrome enamel dial, with pastoral scene around the chapter ring.
The scene shows a shepherdess to the right, with sheep below, and a musician playing bagpipes to the left.
Nice gilt hands.
In very good condition except for a repair to the enamel along a thin strip on the edge between 5 and 7.
INNER CASE : Quite heavy gauge silver, with hallmarks for London 1779 and markers mark TC.
In excellent condition, though the stem and bow are base metal replacements.. The hinge is fine and the bezel snaps shut nicely. The high dome bull’s eye crystal is good.
OUTER CASE : Again heavy silver, with matching hallmarks and maker’s mark to the inner.
The bezel and back are finely engraved with floral bands, and the centre of the back with musical instruments.
The silver is again in excellent condition, with the engraving still sharp. The hinge and catch are fine and the case snaps shut correctly. The catch button is worn down, though still functions.
Joseph Denton was apprenticed in Hull from 1768 and then worked for himself from 1779 at Scale Lane, Hull.
