A fine quality mid 18thc. provincial watch, in silver gilt pair cases and with a signed glazed balance cock. All in fine condition.
MOVEMENT : The gilt fusee movement has a verge escapement, four square pillars, and with the regulator disk engraved onto the top plate.
The glazed balance cock is beautifully pierced with the maker’s initials JG. The balance wheel has 6, rather than the normal 3 spokes.
The movement is protected by a removable gilt dust ring.
Signed Jas. Gibbs, Stockton and numbered 12319.
Running well and in very good condition.
DIAL : The white enamel dial appears to be perfect.
Fancy gilt hands.
INNER CASE : Silver gilt, with London hallmarks for 1775 and maker’s mark RN.
In very good condition, with just a few marks on the sides where the silver shows through the gilding. The hinge is fine and the bezel snaps shut correctly. The high dome bull’s eye crystal is also good.
OUTER CASE : A silver gilt pair case, with silver marks matching the inner.
In very good condition. The hinge and catch are good and the case snaps shut correctly. There is even wear to the gilding on the inside (the silver showing through) and to the outer edge of the rim.
James Gibbs in listed at Stockton on Tess, Co. Durham, from 1743 until 1781.
The case maker is probably Robert Nuttall of Clerkenwell Close, London.
