A good quality early London verge, in nice overall condition.
MOVEMENT : A gilded movement with four square pillars, silver regulator disk, and an unusual pierced and engraved balance cock with a solid rather than pierced foot.
The regulator disk pointer in beautifully made in steel.
The movement is signed Devx. Bowly, London, and numbered 563.
All in good condition, and running well.
DIAL : A signed silver champleve dial. In very good condition.
Good early blued steel beetle hour hand. The minute poker hand is a later replacement.
INNER CASE : No hallmarks (too early), but maker’s mark CC under a crown ?, and the movement serial number 563.
All in very good condition. The high dome bull’s eye crystal is good. The hinge is fine and the bezel snaps shut. The stem has been reattached.
OUTER CASE : No visible marks.
All in very good condition. The catch, catch button and hinge are fine and the bezel snaps shut nicely.
Devereaux Bowly was born in 1696 and was apprenticed in London in 1710. He was free of the Clockmaker’s Company in 1718 and died in 1773.
