John Flook
London, c1760
Silver pair cases, 52.5 mm
Verge escapement
Price £525
A mid 18thc. verge escapement watch, in slightly later silver pair cases.
MOVEMENT : The gilt fusee movement has a verge escapement, engraved and pierced balance cock, four square pillars, and a Tompion type regulator.
Signed Jno. Flook, London and numbered 41.
The movement is protected by a removable gilt dustcap.
Running well and in good condition.
DIAL : The white enamel dial is in very good condition, with just some very light surface scratches.
18thc. black steel beetle and poker hands.
INNER CASE : Silver, with London hallmarks for 1791 and maker’s mark WB.
In excellent condition. The hinge is fine and the bezel snaps shut correctly. The high dome bull’s eye crystal is also good.
OUTER CASE : A silver pair case, with marks matching the inner.
In good condition, with just one tiny dent towards the centre of the back. The hinge and catch are good and the case snaps shut correctly. However the catch button has worn down though is still functional.
This movement dates from about 1760. The dial false plate, dial and cases are all later and probably all date from 1791. The movement plate is screwed, rather than pinned, to the replacement false plate.
John Flook is listed in London from 1754 until 1767.
